This project is the result of a prolific three-year collaboration with Trilux, OSRAM, BJB and Ledon OLED, whose objective was to explore the future possibilities of OLED technology in the business sector. Our findings allowed the client to make crucial decisions for their investment in future developments with OLED technologies. The results led to further refinement for a specific niche product, taking their manufacturing possibilities, their competition and their interests into consideration.

Development occurred in two main stages, each consisting of several phases for ideation, analysis and evaluation, prototyping and construction. Over 40 original ideas were narrowed down to a rigorous selection of five plausible avenues.
We aimed to leverage the advantages of OLED over LEDs, such as their highly homogenous light and non-glare properties. However, at the beginning of the project in 2013, OLEDs presented challenging technical restrictions that had to be overcome for functional, producible and aesthetic configurations.
After evaluating countless proofs of concept and test cases, we arrived at “Levels” – an adjustable light fixture that transforms from an ambient conference room situation to specific lighting scenarios. Its three different settings create either a sculptural light object, the ideal work atmosphere or a pleasant general illumination. Among the input variables are workplace lighting standards – providing specific light intensities by bringing many modules together and adjusting the distance to the users.
An interesting feature came into play in stage 2: flexibility. In order to wire up flexible OLEDs, many cables, connectors and technical components were required. Through our research and explorations, we managed to make a single piece that gives the OLED its form. Now its shape and function could be united as the electrical connector. This feature led our “Wings” series, which turns the complexity of components into a simplicity of structure – ideal lighting through exquisite design.
